The so-called ‘Bermuda Triangle’ is a myth. It was made up fifteen years after world war 2 by an author to sell his book on the subject. If you study maps of the ‘area’, you will see that no two agree to the true shape of it. This came about because a WW II flight leader got lost in the area. He was a Florida native, very experienced in flying around the Florida Keys. He lead his group over a string of islands in the Bermuda locality, and mistook them for the Florida Keys. As he was flying in a northeasterly direction by compass, he “knew” that his compass was “wrong”. He asked the other members of his flight about their compass readings and found that theirs were the same as his and assumed that all the compasses were effected by a mysterious force, and assumed once again that he was right and the instruments were wrong, and they were actually flying southwest and not northeast as the compass said. In making this erroneous decision, he followed through with another serious error in judgment; he turned the flight around, and headed back to where he ‘knew’ Florida was. By not trusting his and the other compasses in their planes, he got the flight lost, ran them out of fuel, and they crashed in the sea where all hands were lost. Military and civilian pilots have flown the area thousands of times since this ‘incident’ and none have been ’swallowed-up’ by the mythical triangle.
